Journal introduction:

South Dakota Review is in its sixth decade. Hosted by the Department of English in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of South Dakota (find us in the watershed of the Missouri River), the magazine has long made space for writing of and from the Great Plains, western United States, and rural Midwest, and has had a special focus on promoting Native writers’ work.

The magazine is now in transition, as a longtime editor steps away and new staff take their places. In this period of change, we are thinking about what a literary journal can be—and be for—in our times. We’re thinking about how to be resource-light and invention-heavy; about collaboration; about kinds of literature we haven’t encountered yet; about our own and others’ reading habits; about pleasure and surprise. We’re also still thinking about locality, land and landscape, nations and other ways of locating oneself, rurality and remove, and the people who’ve been where we are (right here) long before any of us arrived. In other words, we’re thinking about tradition and innovation, and about being together—including being together with you, the people we hope will be or become readers of South Dakota Review.
