Journal introduction:

Sculpture, Monuments and Open Space (SMOS) is a peer-reviewed journal that continues to expand the legacy of Sculpture Review (SR), founded in 1951 by the National Sculpture Society. SR aimed to advance the appreciation and understanding of realist sculpture, primarily featuring invited contributions from members of the sculpture society. Its pages highlighted the diverse ways in which artists across cultures and centuries have used sculpture to express ideas, emotions, and forms through various media.

In 2024, SR transitioned into SMOS to reflect a broader, more inclusive and interdisciplinary focus. While remaining rooted in the study and celebration of sculpture, SMOS now also embraces the larger contexts in which sculpture exists—monuments, memorials, landscape, urban planning, the built environment, and the interaction between art and public space.
